Meta verkoopt op grote schaal ‘slimme’ brillen. Ook volgens de Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens zijn deze vrijwel niet legaal te gebruiken. Ze zien er uit als gewone bril, maar er zit een camera en AI van Meta in. De brillen hebben een indicatieledje dat zou moeten laten zien of de bril filmt. Dat vereist dat je als docent alle brillen inspecteert. Probeer maar eens te zien of er ergens in een volle klas een klein, zwak, ledje brand.
Een klein ledje is bovendien nog geen geldige toestemming voor alle verwerkingen die Meta claimt te mogen doen van de gemaakte beelden. Ook is het ledje eenvoudig af te dekken of onklaar te maken, terwijl er wel wordt gefilmd. Doordat deze ‘slimme’ brillen zo onopvallend zijn, is ‘gluurbril’ een beter benaming! Dat is namelijk waar ze op grote schaal voor gebruikt worden. Dat iemand in jouw school een gluurbril heeft gebruik kom je pas achter als de heimelijk opgenomen filmpjes ergens online komen, maar dan ben je te laat. Zelfs als de filmer de beelden niet publiceert zijn deze en de biometrische informatie daarin toch verwerkt door Meta.
Veel scholen begrijpen de noodzaak van een thuis-of-in-de-kluis-beleid voor smartphones. Nu is het de hoogste tijd om daar een gluurbrilverbod aan toe te voegen. Communiceer dit verbod duidelijk:
- Neem een bepaling over gluurbrillen op in het schoolreglement.
- Informeer leerlingen, docenten en ouders over het vebod.
- Hang bordjes of stickers op bij de ingangen van het schoolgebouw of terrein.
- Bespreek in de klas de gevolgen van de gluurbril.

Ban the pervert glasses on your school!

Meta sells “smart” glasses on a large scale. According to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, these are almost impossible to use legally.(link in Dutch) They look like regular glasses, but there’s a camera and AI from Meta in it. The glasses have an indication LED that should show whether the glasses are filming. That requires you as a teacher to inspect all glasses. Try to see if there is a small, weak, LED on somewhere in a full classroom.
Moreover, a small LED is not valid consent for all processing that Meta claims the right to do from the footage made. The LED is also easy to cover or disable, while filming is being done. Because these ‘smart’ glasses are so inconspicuous, ‘pervert glasses’ is a better name! Peeking by perverts is what they are used for on a large scale. That someone in your school has used these pervert glasses is to be found out when the secretly recorded videos come online somewhere, but then you are too late. Even if the filmer does not publish the footage, these and the biometric information in them are still processed by Meta.
Many schools understand the need for a home-or-in-the-locker policy for smartphones. Now it is high time to add a ban for pervert glasses. Communicate this ban clearly:
- Include a provision on peeping glasses in the school regulations.
- Inform students, teachers and parents about the ban.
- Hang signs or stickers at the entrances to the school building or grounds.
- Discuss the consequences of the pervert glasses in the classroom.
