8 t/m 12 augustus vond WHY2025 , het grootste Europese hackerskamp, plaats in Geestmerambacht (Noord-Holland). Uiteraard was CEDO ook van de partij!
In de talk Digital sovereignty and the FOSS-stack at school zette Geert-Jan opnieuw helder uiteen waarom het zo belangrijk is dat onze kinderen digitaal vaardig worden in een veilige digitale schoolomgeving. De risico’s en nadelen van huidige afhankelijkheid van de grote buitenlandse techspelers (profilering en targetingmogelijkheden, gedragsvoorspelling en -beïnvloeding, vendor lock-in op verschillende niveaus en privatisering van collectieve inspanning) werden helder uit de doeken gedaan. De oplossing mocht natuurlijk ook niet ontbreken: een op publieke waarden gebaseerde stack voor alle IT-domeinen op school. Ook de successen tot nu toe zijn gedeeld: zo zijn er verschillende pilotscholen die de transitie met ons willen aangaan en zijn Chromebooks al bevrijd van Google – en dus bruikbaar tot ze kapot gaan, in plaats van tot Google ze niet meer wil ondersteunen. Bovendien werd weer eens duidelijk dat er al verschillende mogelijkheden zijn om over te stappen op ethische alternatieven! Zie bijvoorbeeld hieronder. August 8-12, WHY2025, the largest European hackers camp, took place in Geestmerambacht (Noord-Holland). CEDO was there, of course!
During his talk Digital sovereignty and the FOSS-stack at school Geert-Jan once more explained why it is so important that our children learn digital skills in a safe digital school environment (see above for the video). The risks and downsides of the current dependency of big foreign tech companies (profiling and targeting, prediction and controlling of behaviour, vendor lock-in at several levels and privatization of collective effort) were clearly summarized. Of course, the solution was also presented: A stack comprising all IT domains at school, based on public values. Accomplishments so far were shared too. For example, there are several pilot schools that have joined us and want to switch to opensource software, and we already liberated Chromebooks from Google – which means they can be used until they break down, not till Google decides to no longer support them. Besides, it became clear again that there are already several possibilities to switch to ethical alternatives! See the picture above for examples.
